5 things to do in Gordon’s Bay

Posted: January 16, 2018

Gordon’s Bay is the Western Cape’s best kept secret. This small seaside town offers both relaxing beaches and adrenaline pumping activities which makes it the perfect retreat for backpackers and families a like. Here is a list of five ‘must-do’s’ in and around Gordons Bay…

  1. Bikini Beach

This little gem is situated further along from Gordon’s Bay beach and boasts an amazing backdrop of the Hottentot Holland mountain range. Bikini Beach is one of Cape Towns six Blue Flag Beaches, indicating its cleanliness, water quality and overall safety. I was lucky enough to spend Christmas day sunbathing on Bikini beach and it sure didn’t disappoint. Alongside the warm and clear water you also able to take shelter from the infamous winds which batter Gordon’s Bay on a daily basis.

  1. Fish N’ Chips

This may seem like a fairly simple activity, but I promise you that the fish and chips at Ooskus fishery can’t be missed! Grab yourself a fish supper and stroll down to the pier and watch the sunset, if you’re lucky you might spot some hungry seals too.

  1. Bikini Beach Books

Forgot to pack your favourite poolside novel? Bikini Beach Books has you covered. This old beachfront house is overflowing with well preserved, second-hand books at a bargain. However, this store is not for the faint hearted. Every conceivable table, shelf and floor space is teaming with books meaning the collection is only categorised to a degree. Give yourself a few hours to delve into the organised chaos – this treasure trove shouldn’t be missed.

  1. Crystal Pools Hike

This is an easy hike to a series of mountainous pools in the beautiful valley known as Steenbras River Gorge. The path is fairly gently and is well sign posted along the way meaning that you do not have to be an experienced hiker to enjoy this trip. Once you reach the pools you can either relax in the cool water, or for the thrill seekers, you can practise your cliff jumping!

  1. Sea Kayaking

Black Pearl Adventures offers guided sea kayaking expeditions in Gordon’s Bay. This experience allows you to view some of the amazing sea birds with the possibility of encountering seals, dolphins and maybe even whales! Spend two hours following the coastline learning about the nature which surrounds you and ending with a magical sunset.
