Oxapampa, Peru

Volunteer in Oxapampa

Travel to Oxapampa, where rolling hills seem to be suspended in the clouds in one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth.

Our team in Oxapampa is based alongside Yanachaga-Chemillén National Park, a protected biodiversity hotspot on the eastern side of the Andes stretching down to the Amazon Basin. They work to conserve the rare cloud forest habitat with its spectacularly diverse flora and fauna.

Oxapampa volunteer projects

Overview

Join GVI to volunteer in Oxapampa, in central Peru. Our wildlife conservation research base in Oxapampa is found just a short walk from the stunning Yanachaga-Chemillen National Park. Recognised by UNESCO for its rare cloud forest ecosystems and wealth of biodiversity, the park is surrounded by protected Peruvian Amazon cloud forest.

Here you can spend your time surrounded by the breathtaking scenery and wildlife of the rich canals and tropical rainforest. Have the opportunity to spot species such as armadillo, jaguarundi, ocelot, puma, spectacled bear, andean fox, and howler monkey.

Both wildlife conservation and community development programs are run from this base, which is located in a research centre of our main partner CDS. For those wishing to explore the Amazon cloud forest on our wildlife conservation programs, activities might include biodiversity survey training, camera trapping, flora and fauna studies, reforestation, macroinvertebrates, tracking jungle species and data collection in the cloud forest biome.

By taking part in these programs you will help us contribute to addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals, one of whose aims is to conserve life on land. All of these initiatives will assist in the wildlife conservation efforts in the Peruvian Amazon.
