Assessing animal intelligence or ‘cognition’ is often done by comparing individual prosocial or constructive behaviour with that of other species, humans in particular. This method combines technical screening and observational methods to measure cognitive aptitude. Some objects used in testing include mirrors, mazes, recognizing shapes, phone keypads and matching boards.

In addition to these objects, researchers may also use food-based tests to measure an animal’s cognitive abilities. For example, a researcher may place food in a container that requires the animal to use a tool to access the food. This type of test can measure an animal’s problem-solving skills and ability to use tools. Other tests may involve an animal’s ability to recognize patterns or remember locations. By using a variety of tests, researchers can gain a better understanding of an animal’s cognitive abilities.

Comparing Animal Intelligence to Human Intelligence

Animal intelligence should not be underestimated. Some apes have capabilities comparable to humans in many respects. Chimpanzees for instance possess an incredible problem-solving capacity which rivals that of children aged three to five. Some octopuses can also recognise shapes, solve problems, and even open intricate jars from the inside.

Analysing the Evolution of Animal Intelligence

The human brain evolved over millions of years and scientists believe that a similar evolutionary process occurred with other animals. However, new research suggests that this process may not have necessarily been linear. Scientists suggest that the development of mutualistic behaviours among animals may have given rise to more complex social structures. This environment then led to higher levels of intelligence.

In addition, the development of tools and weapons by animals has been linked to increased intelligence. For example, chimpanzees have been observed using sticks to fish for termites, and dolphins have been observed using sponges to protect their noses while foraging for food. These behaviours demonstrate a level of problem-solving and intelligence that is not seen in other animals.

Examining the Impact of Animal Intelligence on Survival

Animals whose cognition is more advanced have a greater capacity for problem-solving, decision-making and planning, increasing both their chances of survival and their quality of life. This intelligence has enabled them to find novel ways to access food sources and navigate difficult terrain conditions. It has also allowed them to engage in more complex behaviours such as tool usage that give them access to resources that were formerly unavailable.

Although due to its transient nature, measuring animal intelligence remains a challenge, studies into non-domesticated wild animals have yielded some exciting discoveries that have helped us learn more about their cognisance.
